Stress and Digestion
In this week’s video, I explain the physiology of the link between chronic stress and impaired digestion. I discuss how being in a sympathetic nervous system response (“fight-flight-freeze”) affects our digestive capacity, as well as how chronic stress reduces vagal nerve tone and impairs the messaging of the gut-brain axis. Over time, this can lead to a myriad of digestive issues common today, such as hypochlorhydria, acid reflux, bloating, and constipation. Finally, I discuss the importance of calm and mindful eating for an enhanced capacity for digestion.
